General Overview:

It’s important to read with our children daily to help with their brain development.  Epic! is a good digital reading system that we can use at home and at classroom.

Epic! is a digital library with picture books, classic stories, educational books. It supports students in all reading level from pre-k to grade 7. EPIC also have books that support multiple domains from science, language, math, social emotional, etc.

For this week, I am introducing feelings/emotions to my students by using EPIC and read an audio book together “Sometimes I Feel by Kim Thomson & Karen Hilderbrand”.

Authentic Learning Experience:

EPIC provides authentic learning experience. Epic has a diverse digital library that allows students to find variety of books based on their interest to support their love of reading.

On EPIC, students take ownership over their learning. They take ownership by choosing which books they are going to read and what skills they are going to practice.

EPIC has digital audio books on their website. Meaning preschools students can listen to the books with their family and friends. This creates an authentic learning experience by allowing students to learn and practice these skills in a community of learners.

EPIC also requires students to use higher level thinking skills while listening to the books.

As part of my lesson, EPIC also help with social emotional that children might encounter in real-life experience that shows that it's normal that we have feeling (sad, happy, tired, frustrated, etc.).

Developmentally Appropriate Practices (child development, interest based, culturally appropriate):

Epic! has created a diverse digital library to provide all children and families access to books they can read at home. They have a diverse library that provides books in many different languages such as English, French, Spanish, and more. This website/app provides children with books that represent all cultures, backgrounds, and families. This activity allows students to take ownership over their learning by choosing what type of books they are going to read and what they are going to learn about. Epic! is developmentally appropriate as it support student’s early literacy development. It supports early literacy development by providing children access to practice skills and activities to support literacy development. For example, Epic! supports students’ phonological awareness, print awareness, vocabulary, print motivation, and more. Epic! fosters a love for reading which supports a lifelong love for reading and literacy.  â€‹
