Learning with ABCya! -

“Fuzz Bugs – Counting, Sorting, & Comparing”

General Overview:

I chose ABCya. ABCya.com is a website that provides educational games and activities for school-aged children.

The games on the website are organized into grade levels from pre-kindergarten to Sixth grade, as well as into subject categories such as letters, numbers, and holidays. ABCya offers Early Learning Games. The game that I choose for this week is “Fuzz Bugs – Counting, Sorting, & Comparing”

Authentic Learning Experience:

ABCya “Fuzz Bugs – Counting, Sorting, & Comparing” provides an authentic learning experience since the program emphasizes exploration, play, and positive reinforcement—encouraging children to become confident and intrinsically motivated.

Children can direct their own learning based on their skills to complete the activities (sorting, counting, and comparing).

Children also use thinking skills as part of completing activities as it’s an interactive game that use open-ended questions.

Developmentally Appropriate Practices (child development, interest based, culturally appropriate):

ABCya provides development appropriate practices since their games are organized into grade levels from pre-kindergarten to Sixth grade, as well as into subject categories such as letters. They are using WA Early Achiever Standard as part of their games.  Each game is designed based on common core standard that help teachers to assess or to help students to learn various concepts in many subject matters. This game that I select is unique as it was made to help a child to learn how to sort, count, and compare.

Washington Early Learning Guidelines:

The ABCya "Fuzz Bugs – Counting, Sorting, & Comparing”  also also support WA State Developmental Guidelines in Math. These developmental guidelines are:

  • Sort based on color

  • Identify by sight how many are in a small group of objects, up to 10

  • Compare group of up to 10 objects

  • Compare items and describe objects using comparison words (More, Less, Most, Least)
